How it works

How a cab fare is worked out

  1. 1

    One way

Rate per km times the distance, or times the minimum km when the trip is shorter. The driver allowance is part of the rate.

  2. 2

    Round trip

The car drives the road twice, so double the distance. Bill the larger of that and the minimum km a day times the days, then add the driver allowance for each day.

  3. 3

    Hourly

A package price for a set number of hours and km, such as 8 hours / 80 km. The extra hour and extra km rates are stated on the quote, not added, because nobody knows the overage yet.

  4. 4

    Discount

Comes off the fare before GST, never off tolls. The quote shows the old price struck out and what the guest saves.

  5. 5

    Tolls, parking and permits

Passed on at cost, because they depend on the route and the states crossed. Leave the box empty and the quote says "as per actuals".

  6. 6

    GST

Charged on the fare, not on the tolls and permits you pass on.

Questions, answered.

Why do outstation cabs charge a minimum km a day?

A car booked for a day cannot take another job that day, even if it drives only 100 km. Most operators bill at least 250 km a day (300 km for tempo travellers), and charge per km beyond that.

How is a round-trip cab fare calculated?

Double the one-way distance, because the car drives it both ways. Compare that with the minimum km a day times the number of days, and bill the larger at your rate per km. Then add the driver allowance for each day, and tolls, parking and permits.

What is driver allowance?

A daily amount for the driver’s food and stay on outstation trips, usually ₹300 to ₹350 a day for cars and about ₹600 for tempo travellers. A one-way fare normally includes it.

Are tolls and state permits included in the fare?

Usually not. Most operators quote them separately and pass them on at cost, because they depend on the route and the states crossed. This calculator adds them after GST for the same reason.

Should I charge GST on a cab fare?

Many cab operators charge 5% GST on the fare. The right rate depends on your registration and whether you claim input tax credit, so check with your accountant. The calculator adds 5% GST to the fare when you tick it.
